What Do OCs Do?

Be An Orientation Counselor

Every year, New Student Programs seeks highly motivated students to serve as orientation counselors for our major orientation programs.

Orientation Counselors are ambassadors of Washington State University. During Spring Transfer Alive, Summer Alive sessions, and Fall Alive, the "OCs" help both new students and new parents of the University make a smooth transition to campus. OCs are extensively trained to be familiar with WSU resources, academic departments, the registration system, the Pullman community, and campus life. Most importantly, orientation counselors are passionately committed to their fellow Cougars and are advocates for student success.

The responsibilities of an OC may include, but are not limited to:

  • Guiding a campus tour
  • Assisting students in creating a class schedule
  • Presenting information to a large classroom
  • Answering parent questions on a plethora of topics
  • Facilitating student discussion on fears of attending college
  • Explaining UCORE (general education) program to new students
  • Singing the fight song with pride (multiple times)
  • Working strenuous, irregular hours

Also, given our current situation with COVID-19, OCs may perform these duties on Zoom or via online methods!
